Centre for Research on Globalisation (CRG)

About Global Research

The Centre for Research on Globalisation (CRG) is an independent research and media organization based in Montreal.  The CRG is a registered non profit organization in the province of Quebec, Canada.

In addition to the Global Research website, the Centre is involved in book publishing, support to humanitarian projects as well as educational outreach activities including the organization of public conferences and lectures. The Centre also acts as a think tank on crucial  economic and geopolitical issues.

The Global Research website at www.globalresearch.ca publishes news articles, commentary, background research and analysis on a broad range of issues, focussing on social, economic, strategic and environmental processes.

The Global Research website was established on the 9th of September 2001, two days before the tragic events of September 11. Barely a few days later, Global Research had become a major news source on the New World Order and Washington’s “war on terrorism”.

Since September 2001, we have established an extensive archive of news articles, in-depth reports and analysis on issues which are barely covered by the mainstream media.

In an era of media disinformation, our focus has essentially been to center on the “unspoken truth”.

During the invasion of Iraq (March-April 2003), Global Research published, on a daily basis, independent reports from the Middle East, which provided an alternative to the news emanating from the “embedded” journalists reporting from the war theater. Since 2004, Global Research has provided detailed analysis and coverage of US-NATO-Israel preparations to wage a pre-emptive nuclear attack on Iran.

In early 2006, Global Research established a separate French language website, www.mondialisation.ca, which reaches Francophone readers in Western Europe, North America, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.

In 2007, we launched Spanish, Portuguese and German language pages, which contain translations of Global Research articles. Arabic, Italian and Serbian language pages were launched in 2008.

In June 2010, we launched The Global Research TV (GRTV) website, which features selected videos as well as commentary, analysis and news coverage

The articles in French are contained in a separate Mondialisation.ca archive. Those in other languages are contained in the main Globalresearch.ca archive.

Global Research articles are used as source material by college and university students. Moreover, numerous universities, libraries and research institutions have established a link to Global Research on their respective web sites.

Global Research has also become a source of specialized information and analysis for journalists, senior government officials, financial analysts and non-governmental organizations.

Since 2001, Global Research has established an international network of authors, scholars and investigative journalists. Global Research counts among its regular contributors a number of prominent writers, researchers  and academics as well as several promising young authors.

Many Global Research authors have developed their own blog sites. Our focus has been to support our authors’ blog sites, while also promoting several partner alternative media websites.

Emphasis has been placed on establishing a comprehensive archive of Global Research articles and videos.

The Global Research archive (2001-2010) includes more than 20,000 articles and news reports. The Mondialisation.ca archive contains more than 6000 articles in French.

Our data bank (2005-2010) includes a classification by author, and by country.

Since the launching of GRTV, we  have developed an archive of videos, classified by theme and geographic region. Also of interest is our earlier archive of audio-video material,

Global Research is classified among the top 50 Alternative News Sources by www.World-Newspapers.com,  Global Research is also recommended as a resource by the American Library Association (ALA).

In 2008, Global Research and Professor Chossudovsky were awarded The First National Prize of the Mexican Press Club, for the “Best Research Website” at the international level.

In the course of the last few years, several Global Research authors have received awards for their writings.

Global Research has become one of the main alternative media websites in North America. While Global Research operates on a shoe string budget compared to the well-endowed establishment think tanks, it has more readers than the powerful Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). (see graph below).

Truth, Propaganda & Media Manipulation

By Global Research
Global Research, March 27, 2011

Never before has it been so important to have independent, honest voices and sources of information. We are – as a society – inundated and overwhelmed with a flood of information from a wide array of sources, but these sources of information, by and large, serve the powerful interests and individuals that own them. The main sources of information, for both public and official consumption, include the mainstream media, alternative media, academia and think tanks.

The mainstream media is the most obvious in its inherent bias and manipulation. The mainstream media is owned directly by large multinational corporations, and through their boards of directors are connected with a plethora of other major global corporations and elite interests. An example of these connections can be seen through the board of Time Warner.

Time Warner owns Time Magazine, HBO, Warner Bros., and CNN, among many others. The board of directors includes individuals past or presently affiliated with: the Council on Foreign Relations, the IMF, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Warburg Pincus, Phillip Morris, and AMR Corporation, among many others.

Two of the most “esteemed” sources of news in the U.S. are the New York Times (referred to as “the paper of record”) and the Washington Post. The New York Times has on its board people who are past or presently affiliated with: Schering-Plough International (pharmaceuticals), the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Chevron Corporation, Wesco Financial Corporation, Kohlberg & Company, The Charles Schwab Corporation, eBay Inc., Xerox, IBM, Ford Motor Company, Eli Lilly & Company, among others. Hardly a bastion of impartiality.

And the same could be said for the Washington Post, which has on its board: Lee Bollinger, the President of Columbia University and Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Warren Buffett, billionaire financial investor, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway; and individuals associated with (past or presently): the Coca-Cola Company, New York University, Conservation International, the Council on Foreign Relations, Xerox, Catalyst, Johnson & Johnson, Target Corporation, RAND Corporation, General Motors, and the Business Council, among others.

It is also important to address how the mainstream media is intertwined, often covertly and secretly, with the government. Carl Bernstein, one of the two Washington Post reporters who covered the Watergate scandal, revealed that there were over 400 American journalists who had “secretly carried out assignments for the Central Intelligence Agency.” Interestingly, “the use of journalists has been among the most productive means of intelligence-gathering employed by the CIA.” Among organizations which cooperated with the CIA were the “American Broadcasting Company, the National Broadcasting Company, the Associated Press, United Press International, Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps-Howard, Newsweek magazine, the Mutual Broadcasting System, the Miami Herald and the old Saturday Evening Post and New York Herald-Tribune.”

By far the most valuable of these associations, according to CIA officials, have been with the New York Times, CBS and Time Inc. The CIA even ran a training program “to teach its agents to be journalists,” who were “then placed in major news organizations with help from management.”

These types of relationships have continued in the decades since, although perhaps more covertly and quietly than before. For example, it was revealed in 2000 that during the NATO bombing of Kosovo, “several officers from the US Army’s 4th Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) Group at Ft. Bragg worked in the news division at CNN’s Atlanta headquarters.” This same Army Psyop outfit had “planted stories in the U.S. media supporting the Reagan Administration’s Central America policies,” which was described by the Miami Herald as a “vast psychological warfare operation of the kind the military conducts to influence a population in enemy territory.” These Army PSYOP officers also worked at National Public Radio (NPR) at the same time. The US military has, in fact, had a strong relationship with CNN.

In 2008, it was reported that the Pentagon ran a major propaganda campaign by using retired Generals and former Pentagon officials to present a good picture of the administration’s war-time policies. The program started in the lead-up to the Iraq War in 2003 and continued into 2009. These officials, presented as “military analysts”, regurgitate government talking points and often sit on the boards of military contractors, thus having a vested interest in the subjects they are brought on to “analyze.”

The major philanthropic foundations in the United States have often used their enormous wealth to co-opt voices of dissent and movements of resistance into channels that are safe for the powers that be. As McGeorge Bundy, former President of the Ford Foundation once said, “Everything the Foundation does is to make the world safe for Capitalism.”

Examples of this include philanthropies like the Rockefeller Foundation, Ford Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation providing immense financial and organizational support to Non-Governmental Organizations. Furthermore, the alternative media are often funded by these same foundations, which has the effect of influencing the direction of coverage as well as the stifling of critical analysis.

This now brings us to the Centre for Research on Globalization (CRG) and Global Research.

As an institution which acts as a research centre as well as a source of alternative news through the website http://www.globalresearch.ca, the CRG has become a much needed voice of independence seeking to break through all the propaganda and misinformation.

To maintain our independence, Global Research does not accept assistance from public and private foundations. Nor do we seek support from universities and/or government.

While the objective is to expand and help spread important and much-needed information to more people than ever before, Global Research needs to rely upon its readers to support the organization.
Thank you, dear readers, for your tireless support.

Supporting Global Research is supporting the cause of truth and the fight against media disinformation.

Thank you.

Calls for NATO Occupation of Libya from Council on Foreign Relations President

Monday, August 22, 2011
The Financial Times has featured an editorial penned by Council on Foreign Relations president Richard Haas titled, “Libya Now Needs Boots on the Ground,” where the arch globalist states that Libya’s rebels are in no way capable of rebuilding Libya properly and will require an “international force” to maintain order. Haas breathtakingly admits that the NATO intervention to “protect civilians” was in fact a political intervention designed to bring about regime change. With NATO leading the offensive against Tripoli, a relatively calm city until now, the alleged cause of “protecting civilians” rings hollower than ever.

Haas goes on to explain that NATO’s “success” is what requires this international assistance in the predictable form of an occupation force to deal with looting, “die-hard regime supporters,” and tribal war. Haas also implores Obama to reconsider his decision to rule out American boots on the ground and to do so quickly.

Of course, NATO didn’t just spend the last 5 months conducting 7,000+ airstrikes on Libya to “protect civilians” and then ride off into the sunset. This was a war of conquest from the very beginning, with globalists openly declaring it would determine the “primacy of international law” over the nation-state. In fact, the initial uprising itself was gestated in Washington and London where opposition leaders were provided resources and safe-havens to conduct their sedition, with globalist stooges like Ibrahim Sahad literally sitting in front of the White House calling for NATO to bomb his homeland. NATO, its members, particularly the US, UK, and France, and the globalist corporate-financiers behind them, fully intend to rebuild Libya according to their own aspirations shoehorned into a national consensus imposed upon the Libyan people under the guise of “democracy” and “civil society.” We are watching a modern empire expand its boundaries into yet another sovereign nation.

Readers may remember an April 2011 article titled “Libyan Rebels Fighting the Globalists’ War” with the ever increasingly appropriate subtitle, “How the Devil Pays.” In it a caption attempts to sum up Libya’s future by stating, “if these rebels really think the West is going to hand them Libya and its riches, they have another thing coming. The Neo-Con arm of the globalist agenda is already seeding the ground to deal with “extremists” coming to power after the “Arab Spring” runs its course. That means Libya’s oil & future will be left in the hands of NATO troops, not the Libyan people.”

The article continues:

“While the dichotomy of Western politics is merely for public consumption, what each camp states publicly can be put together as a composite giving us a clearer picture of the overall globalist agenda. Neo-Conservative war monger Daniel Pipes, a PNAC signatory, CFR member, and co-conspirator in many of the darkest chapters of recent American history, was recently sharing his “doubts” over the final result of the “Arab Spring.” He believes that ultimately extremists will prevail in many cases and only complicate US relations with certain countries.

Of course, Pipes most likely didn’t miss the memo and is fully aware that the “Arab Spring” is a US funded gambit, one his fellow “Neo-Cons” lining the National Endowment for Democracy and the fraudulent Freedom House are admittedly involved in. At the very least, he must have picked up the New York Times and read as much. So what exactly is Pipes trying to tell us? He is saying that as soon as the Libyan rebels secure Libya, or the Muslim Brotherhood takes hold of Syria, or Yemen, or wins out in a co-opted counterrevolution against International Crisis Group stooge Mohamed ElBaradei in Egypt, the blinders Western propagandists seem to be wearing will suddenly drop and point out that indeed the globalists have installed extremists “by accident.”

To rectify this, Libyan rebels will be betrayed just as quickly as Qaddafi was. They will be removed from power, and replaced by Western stooges protected by NATO ground troops, conveniently already being put on the ground in Libya, and will stay there permanently. The globalist “Neo-Con” think tank Foreign Policy Initiative has stated, “The best way to reduce the potential dangers posed by extremist infiltration is for the United States and its allies to remain engaged in Libya.”

This engagement most likely will take the shape of the other unending “engagements” in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the years of cross-border raids into Pakistan. The oil money that once built water ways, public housing, and farms from Benghazi to Tripoli, will be funneled directly out of the country and into the corporate-financier’s accounts. The corporate-financier oligarchs will have taken yet another nation-state down with the help of its own gullible population, and for their gullibility, they will pay for the rest of their lives, as will their children and their children’s children.

To understand the full scope of the global corporate-financier oligarchy’s designs toward any given nation, we must simply look back at the brazen admissions made over the intended future stemming from the outright military conquest of Iraq and Paul Bremer’s (CFR) planned economic reformation of the broken nation. The Economist enumerates the “economic liberalization” of Iraq in a piece titled “Let’s all go to the yard sale: If it all works out, Iraq will be a capitalist’s dream:”

1. 100% ownership of Iraqi assets.
2. Full repatriation of profits.
3. Equal legal standing with local firms.
4. Foreign banks allowed to operate or buy into local banks.
5. Income and corporate taxes capped at 15%.
6. Universal tariffs slashed to 5%.

Anyone who would willfully make a deal with such people must have their discernment called into question. As Hugo Chavez of Venezuela said of Hosni Mubarak’s decades of appeasing the globalists and his eventual ousting from power at the hands of US funded, trained, and supported protesters, “that’s how the devil pays.” Indeed it is, and it is an instructive lesson for others including the rebels of Benghazi to consider as they attempt to make their own deals with the globalists today.”

And indeed, as NATO rushes through to the finish line with a spectacular display of mass-murder and mayhem in Libya, and with the rebels dancing in the streets as NATO warplanes roar overhead, the time is soon approaching for Benghazi to pay back the West for their “help.”

As pundits in the duplicitous corporate media feign ignorance over the future of Libya, as if it is truly in the hands of the Libyan people as Obama cartoonishly portrayed in his latest teleprompter reading, the self-proclaimed “Transitional National Council” leader Gibril Elqarfally gave us cyrstal clear picture of Libya’s future – one inspired by globalization. In a May 12, 2011 talk before the Brookings Institution, he claimed “what’s taking place is a natural product of the globalizational process that started in the mid-80′s.”

Elwarfally talks about a “new global cultural paradigm,” “new global values,” common values, shared by many “young people.” These young people, he says, are calling for human dignity, democracy, and inclusion at all levels of national government, repeating verbatim statements coming from geopolitical meddler Zbigniew Brzezinski and the myriad of US-funded NGOs that promote these “new global values.”

Photo: Libyan rebel leader Gibril Elqarfally stands before the Fortune 500-funded Brookings Institution openly declaring fealty to the globalist agenda of interdependency and subservience to a Wall Street-London international order.

….

When asked by an audience member what Libya will look like in 2025, it turns out conveniently he was part of a study by Libyan professors and “Libyan practitioners” in 2007-2008 titled “Libya: Vision 2025.” Not surprisingly, this project was conducted with input from the IMF and involved Libya’s placement within the “global scene.” Elwarfally laments that Libya’s oil reserves are limited and that the solution is a transition to a service economy. He also claims Vision 2025′s conclusion included an education shift, turning Libya into “a lake” to develop the skills of Africans to serve the needs of the European Union.

Surely Africans are eager to once again be in the service of wealthy Europeans, who at one point owned tremendous swaths of their continent, some tycoons naming entire nations after themselves in the ultimate expression of imperial megalomania. Elwarfally, a man educated in Pittsburgh, and apparently a lifelong fan of globalization, stuns us with his frank comments and his disturbing vision for the future of not only Libya, but the role it will play in directing Africa’s efforts and resources toward American and European corporate-financier interests.

While Qaddafi’s comments are dismissed out of hand, a recent message sent to his followers amidst fighting in Tripoli declared, “the traitors are paving the way for the occupation forces to be deployed in Tripoli.” It seems no truer words have ever been spoken and the Libyan people, including the rebels, will have no one but themselves to blame if they allow such a way to be paved.

Sarkozy Received Cash Handouts

Nicolas Sarkozy personally received cash handouts from the L’Oréal cosmetics heiress Liliane Bettencourt for his 2007 election campaign, a judge who first investigated the affair claims in an explosive new book.

The assertions by the highly respected magistrate Isabelle Prevost-Desprez threaten to reignite a political and financial scandal that gripped France a year ago and rocked Mr Sarkozy’s government.

She makes the claims in “Sarko m’a tuer” (Sarko Killed Me), a book by two investigative journalists from Le Monde newspaper, out today (Thurs). Gérard Davet and Fabrice Lhomme interviewed 27 politicians, magistrates, businessmen and other figures who say they were professionally broken and personally humiliated by Mr Sarkozy and his inner circle.

The authors claim they were bugged, tailed by French secret services and that their flats were mysteriously burgled.

In the book, Miss Desprez cites a witness who claims to have seen France’s wealthiest woman hand bank notes to Mr Sarkozy. Excerpts were published by Liberation newspaper.

Liliane Bettencourt

“Liliane Bettencourt’s nurse told my stenographer, after being questioned by me: ‘I saw cash payments to Sarkozy, but I couldn’t say it in my statement’,” Miss Desprez is quoted as saying. She adds that she was “struck by the fear of witnesses” when it came to mentioning the French president under oath.

Mr Sarkozy’s office categorically denied the claims, calling them “scandalous, unfounded and untruthful.”

Jean-Francois Copé, head of Mr Sarkozy’s UMP party, suggested that the timing of the claims was suspicious, given that the presidential election is only a few months away.

François Hollande, the Socialist presidential front-runner said he was “cautious” about the claims.

But he said: “This book reveals that there appears to be within the Elysée a cell right by the president which, together with the police and judiciary, exerts pressure so that some scandals come to light and others stifled.”

The Bettencourt affair first surfaced late 2007, when the 88-year-old billionaire’s daughter, Francoise Meyers-Bettencourt, sued photographer Francois-Marie Banier, a friend of the heiress, asserting that he had bamboozled her mother out of almost a billion euros in life insurance, cash and artworks.

The subsequent investigation soon mushroomed into a wider political scandal, involving allegations of influence-peddling by then budget minister and former party secretary Eric Woerth and illegal financing of Mr Sarkozy’s party.

French law limits donations to political parties to 7,500 euros (£6,650) per person per year. Only 150 euros (£133) may be given in cash.

Miss Desproz was taken off the case last November due to her acrimonious relationship with Philippe Courroye, the prosecutor of Nanterre, widely seen as being very close to Mr Sarkozy.

She was unable to investigate the nurse’s claims as her investigation was limited to the mother-daughter feud. But she told the book’s authors she was convinced Mr Sarkozy sought to eliminate her for fear of the cash allegations coming to court.

The judge could face disciplinary action for violation of a witness’s privacy and failing in her “duty of reserve”.

Mr Sarkozy’s name has featured in previous allegations of illegal party funding concerning Mrs Bettencourt, but never as direct recipient.

Three Bordeaux judges are continuing their investigations into several aspects of the Bettencourt case. They are investigating allegations Mr Woerth received cash payments and was guilty of a conflict of interest as his wife worked for Mrs Bettencourt’s wealth manager.

He and the government have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The family feud in the Bettencourt case appeared to end in December 2010, when the mother and daughter reconciled, but in June, it flared up anew after Mrs Bettencourt Meyers once again sought legal wardship for her mother, saying she was surrounded by a predatory “circle.

Nicolas Sarkozy’s Scandals: a Guide

Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidency has been continually tainted with the whiff of scandal and questions over his cosy relationships with some of France’s richest people.

Two alleged scandals – the Bettencourt and Tapie affairs – are under judicial investigation and touch on support given to President Sarkozy during his successful 2007 election campaign.
Bettencourt
Last year, an accountant for France’s richest woman, Liliane Bettencourt made made allegations that the L’Oreal heiress had given an illegal cash donation to Mr Sarkozy’s presidential campaign in 2007.
It is alleged that staff acting for Mrs Bettencourt gave an envelope stuffed with €150,000 (£132,000) in cash to Eric Woerth, the finance director of Sarkozy’s campaign formerly France’s employment minister.
If proved, the donation would be illegal because it is well over a £4,000 limit on individual donations to presidential campaigans.

Liliane Bettencourt

The Bettencourt investigations continues amid the latest allegations on Wednesday of a new witness to the donation seven months before President Sarkozy faces a re-election battle. Mr Sarkozy, his campaign and Mr Woerth deny any wrongdoing. Investigation is ongoing. Tapie Christine Lagarde, who took over the IMF after the Dominique Strauss-Kahn sex scaqndal, is being investigated by French courts for allegedly authorising a £270 million payout to a prominent President Sarkozy supporter when she was finance minister. The Court of Justice of the Republic, a special tribunal qualified to judge the conduct of France’s government ministers while in office, said that the she may have abused her position as finance minister in France to help Bernard Tapie, a controversial businessman. Ms Lagarde is accused of improperly intervening to decide a protrated dispute between Mr Tapiet, a convicted football match fixer and tax dodger who supported Mr Sarkozy’s governing UMP party. An investigation is ongoing. Ms Lagarde denies any wrongdoing. Karachigate President Sarkozy has also been dogged by an ongoing investigation into kickbacks that were paid on the €800 million (£707m) sale of three French Agosta 90B submarines to Pakistan in 1994. There are suspicions that €80 million in “commissions” legally paid to senior Pakistanis were recycled back to France and the failed presidential campaign fund of Edouard Balladur, the then French Prime Minister. Mr Sarkozy, then the budget minister, was the Balladur campaign spokesman. When Jacques Chirac became President in May 1995, it is alleged that he cancelled remaining Pakistani “commissions” to punish Mr Balladur for his rivalry. The cancellation of the payments have been linked by some to a bomb attack on a bus in Karachi in May 2002 in which 11 French engineers and four Pakistanis died. An investigation continues. All parties deny any wrongdoing. Clearstream Last year, Dominique de Villepin, the former French prime minister, was cleared after the “trial of the century” of being part of a conspiracy to smear Mr Sarkozy and sabotage his campaign to become president in 2007. Mr Villepin, who became prime minister in 2005 after stints as foreign and interior minister, had been accused of using faked documents to link Mr Sarkozy to the Clearstream corruption probe as the two competed to succeed the ageing Chirac. Perks In 2010, President Sarkozy was forced to order members of his government to “vigorously reduce” their spending after a string of scandals claimed political scalps and mired his administration in allegations of profligacy. His development minister resigned in the aftermath of outrage that he spent €116,500 (£96,000) on a private jet to take him to Martinique for a conference. He was joined by the minister for the Paris regional economy who stepped down after it emerged he spent €12,000 (£9,759) of taxpayers’ money on Havana cigars.

France Lost Principles & Honor in Libya

The former French Interior Intelligence chief (DCRI: Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence), Yves Bonny, said to (elKhabar) an Algerian newspaper (http://www.elkhabar.com/ar/monde/265340.htmlArabic text) on Saturday that France has lost its principles and honor and credibility in Libya.

Yves Bonny former DCRI chief

Bonnie Said: “France may have won the money, and this is not happening yet, but I am afraid that France has lost its principles and honor and credibility, and commitment to Africa. Nothing explains allow France to abandon its democratic principles which it had built .. give up our principles is dangerous” .

“The French newspapers are talking day and night about the huge funds received by France and the oil contracts, contracts that they are about 150 billion euros. I wonder what is the price of these contracts for the reconstruction of Libya …”

Bonnie stressed on the lofty principles that he believes in the West, and France in particular, such as democracy, freedom and legality, underwent the process of the overthrow of Qadhafi’s “equation of the strongest,” regardless of the principles and values, which he said had not been respected.

Bonnie pointed out that the new Libyan authority is lacking sovereignty and legitimacy, and that the new rulers of Libya are self-appointed and endorsed by the French President and  French journalist and writer Bernard-Henri Levy.

He said they “.. went out to the public after a meeting with President Sarkozy, they became masters of the new Libya, they are not sensitive, neither in form or in content.”

Sarkozy with Libya NTC

“For those who win a war it leads them to the rule, but they (NTC) did not do war, but other people did, even the legitimacy of rule by winning the war is not there.”

He attributed the involvement of NATO’s nations in the war because they do not realize what is happening in Libya and the reality of the situation, where they are missing real appreciation of things and said, “They raise a snake and the day will come to suffer its bite, and France will be the first to get it, although I do not hope this shall happens. “

He stressed that the fall of the Muammar Gaddafi in this way and the rise of the radical Islamic ideology to power in Libya will have an impact on the map of security in the region because the new rulers in Libya are unlikely to have the same level of cooperation that was provided by the Gaddafi and the same seriousness regarding the fight against al Qaeda.
